Program: “Autopsy Party, a rebirth of old and damaged FrankenBlankie quilts

Speaker Lois Levihn performs autopsies to learn what it will take to make the quilt to come back to life! The quilt crime investigations begin with ten questions to ask yourself first.

So, please bring any quilt(s) that you would like advice about how to restore, finish, repair, etc. Lois will incorporate your ‘autopsies’ into her program.

Lois writes on the website at BornAgainQuilts.com: Every quilt is unique. It silently relates the story of its maker and the time period of its creation. Many families cherish and pass them to the next generation. Others are relegated to the auction, the garage sale, or simply thrown away. I used to collect quilts in pristine condition, but I felt sorry for those looked upon with disfavor because they weren’t in ‘perfect’ condition. I have the patience and the talent to take them back to their former glory-thus ‘Born Again’.

Orphaned quilt tops are a different story. They never really had a life. Perhaps grandma didn’t have the space for a quilt frame, or arthritis took its toll, or simply she just loved to piece and didn’t care to quilt. Whatever the reason many of these tops are in great condition – they never saw the light of day – just tucked away in a bureau drawer or cedar chest to be discovered after grandma passed away. The beauty of the quilt tops is you can take what grandma started and add your own creativity to the project. A time span quilt can either honor grandma’s original plan or be dramatically changed to fit your decor and preferences.

Lois is with the shop Born Again Quilts at 4005 South Wayne Avenue, Fort Wayne, IN 46807, 2.5 miles from downtown. The hours are By Appointment. Please call 260.515.9446.

The shop has an Etsy presence at bornagainquilts.etsy.com where vintage items, such as quilts, fabric, patterns, sewing accessories, and more are available for purchase. The shop also has a Facebook presence at facebook.com/bornagainquilts.

Program: “Prairie Quilts” presented by Cathy Grafton, quilter and needlework artist

Cathy’s slide lecture features Illinois farmland, woodlands, and bits of remaining prairie near her home. She draws inspiration for her quilts from all of the beauty she sees around her. Cathy will take us on a tour of the land and the progression of styles she used to create her prairie quilts for the past 30+ years. She will bring 8 – 10 quilts to show. Cathy has a website at prairiequiltsandmore.com.

My mother and grandmother taught me to do embroidery when I was six years old. Ever since then I have loved playing with color, and silk ribbon embroidery has given me endless ways to explore the possibilities. Just before the Bicentennial I began to participate in 18th century festivals as a traditional quilter. Most of the festivals I attend are set in the Revolutionary time period where I portray a lady doing fancywork to make my way in the world. I have been teaching and lecturing since that time and when I discovered silk ribbon embroidery my work took on a whole new dimension. I began making small pieces based on the folk art designs from the 18th and early 19th centuries. Using simple designs, many Shaker influences, I have been creating small wall art pieces, housewifes, needlecases and ladies pockets using silk thread and silk ribbon embroidery. In 1996 I wrote a book on silk ribbon embroidery for the American Quilter’s Society. In addition I have an avid interest in flax and linen and the preparation of the flax fibers for spinning into linen. I have antique tools and very old pieces of linen and have spent time both growing and working the flax fibers to learn about our oldest known fiber. —Cathy Grafton
