KPQG Meeting: Tuesday, December 10, 2019 | Program: Christmas Party | Activity: food, game, & show ‘n’ tell

Location:  Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU), 1916 East Markland Avenue, Kokomo, IN  46901. Guests are welcome; you may attend two meetings as a guest before becoming a member. We are accepting membership dues for the year of 2020: $30.00 per year for adults and $5.00 for juniors ages 9 – 16.

Date:  Tuesday, December 10, 2019 [please note: December’s KPQG meeting is the 2nd Tuesday of the month]

Time:  6:00 pm, doors open at  5:30 pm

    • We will begin eating at 6:00 and then play Quilto and have Show ‘n’ Tell.
    • Please bring a dish to share and your own drink.
    • Bring 2 (two) fat quarters, if you want to play Quilto, a quilting bingo game.

KPQG Community Service Project 2019: Quilts for Healthy Families, Kokomo Police Department, & Veterans Home

During the year as a KPQG community service project, our members may make quilts to donate to the Kokomo Police Department; Healthy Families, a program of the Howard County Family Service Association; and Jackson Street Commons Veterans Home in Kokomo.

The quilts are presented at the November KPQG membership meeting to a representative of Healthy Families and of the KPD. We deliver the quilts to the Jackson Street Commons Veterans Home. You may learn more here.

This year we collected 157 donated quilts and presented 59 to the KPD, 85 to Healthy Families, and 13 to the Veterans Home! Thank you to the many KPQG members for their generous gift of service and many hours of sewing/quilting. Here is a sampling of the quilts:

Sleep-In-Your-Own-Bed Winter Quilt Retreat, but leave all of your supplies at the center! All quilters are invited.

“Quilt Retreat Fundraiser for IWU Adult Scholarship Fund”

WHERE:  Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) Kokomo Education Center, 1916 East Markland Avenue, Kokomo, IN 46901

WHEN:  Friday, January 17 & Saturday, January 18, 2020  |  10:00 am – 6:00 pm  |  Registration:  9:00 am

WHO:  All quilters are invited, KPQG members & non-members!

COST:  $40.00 per guest includes both days. You may pay with cash or check during registration time on the event day.

REGISTRATION:  Please sign up at the KPQG December 10, 2019 meeting or call Julie Huval at 765.868.7305 (IWU Office)

ACTIVITIES:

    • FRIDAY:  5″ square fabric exchange (Example: bring 3 to trade and take 3 home. You may bring as many as you would like to trade). You are not required to participate.
    • SATURDAY:  White elephant notion exchange (Bring a wrapped notion to exchange, old, new, antique, odd, make us guess what it is. We will pick one at a time and you can keep or steal from anyone who has already picked a gift!) Lots of fun, but you are not required to participate.
    • EACH DAY a potluck carry-in. You are welcome to participate or bring your own lunch or leave for lunch. Friday is soup day and Saturday is casserole/side dish day. IWU will furnish coffee, bottled water and tableware. There will be a potluck carry-in sign-up sheet at the Tuesday, December 10, 2019,  KPQG meeting.
    • DOOR PRIZE for each guest.

Program:  Art and Symbolism of the Aboriginal fabric from M&S Textiles presented by Mary Beth Simms, owner of The Yellow Door Quilt Store in Nashville, IN

Vending:  Mary Beth will have fabric for purchase.

Mary Beth Simms is a native of Columbus, IN, and currently lives in Brown county, IN, during the spring through the fall and she winters in Hollywood, FL. They say she is living the dream, but the dream is all about quilts and fabric.

She graduated high school and her brilliant mother sent her to St. Mary-of-the-Woods College where she earned a degree in Studio Art with her concentration in fibers. Her love of fabric and fiber started as a child. Mary Beth has quilted with her two best friends, her mother and aunt, since 1998. She is the owner of The Yellow Door Quilt Store, Nashville, IN. KPQG Saturday Open Sew Workshop, October 26, 2019| Focus Activity: Donation Quilts

Location:  Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU), 1916 East Markland Avenue, Kokomo, IN 46901

Date:  Saturday, October 26, 2019  |  Time:  10:00 am – 3:00 pm

Open Sew for Members & Non-members: This is a time for you to work on the focus activity and/or bring whatever you desire to quilt/sew. There is a $5.00 fee for the day to assist with room rental.

Focus activity:  Do you need some dedicated time to sew your donation quilts for Kokomo Piecemakers community service projects for Healthy Families and for the Kokomo Police Department? This is a great chance to do so as well as enjoying fellowship, making new friends, and having fun.

The donation quilts will be presented to the recipient organizations at the KPQG membership meeting on Tuesday, November 12, 2019, at Indiana Wesleyan University at 7:00 pm.

Healthy Families, a program of the Howard County Family Service Association:  Quilts for children up to 3 (three) years old.

Kokomo Police Department:  Quilts of any size. The police department works together with the Child Protective Services and the Kinsey Youth Center. They remove as many as 100 children, babies through teenagers, from their homes a year.

“Metamorphosis” reimagined clothing as art quilts on display at Kokomo-Howard County Public Library downtown through October 2019

Art quilts created by local fiber artist Lana Kirtley are on display in the main gallery of the Kokomo-Howard County Public Library downtown through October. The quilts in the collection “Metamorphosis” are made with clothing she reimagined into art quilts. Here are two examples from the collection:

  • Bricks:  a soft, cotton knit ladies top
  • Southwest Diamonds:  a light and airy fabric gathered skirt

  • Waterlilies:  a nurse’s floral designed scrub shirt
  • Neutral Geometry:  a three-tiered gathered ladies skirt with two different patterned fabrics
  • Made in Macao:  a man’s shirt with large block design and puffy sleeves
  • Hawaiian Floral:  a ladies soft, rayon fabric, long summer dress
  • Dots and Dashes:  a ladies soft and silky fabric blouse
