More about Sarah Burton. She writes…

My mother and I made simple quilts for my older sister’s child, about 1960’s. I made many of my own clothes and majored in Home Economics in High school. Fast forward to 1980: I had a Porcelain Doll shop in Middletown, IN. That combined sewing and porcelain/ceramics.

I loved quilts but did not see a way to pay for my habit until I saw a billboard for a longarm quilting machine. I closed the doll shop and bought my first longarm in 1998.

Some of my customers bought an inexpensive frame for machine quilting with their home machines. My husband and I knew there were better frames and systems available and we became dealers for Hinterberg Design. At this time, my shop was in a mobile home next to our home and was getting crowded. In 2007 we built the pole barn on our property and became dealers for Nolting Manufacturing. Both of these companies were proud of being “Made in the USA”, that pleased us.

My husband Tom is a very important part of this business. He retired from General Motors as a Millwright about the same time I bought my first longarm machine. He services the machines we sell and helps me load customers’ quilts. He is quick to explain he is the CEI and CEO – he Carries Everything In and Carries Everything Out!

We started taking our machines and accessories to quilt shows in Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio to get our name known, originally we thought maybe for five years. It was 12 years later when we learned we thought wrong.

We looked for unique items that would interest quilters. We now stock about 50 bolts of wide back fabrics and six rolls of batting. I am hooked on English Paper Piecing and carry supplies for that form of piecing.

We have three children, eight grandchildren, and nearly three great grandsons ( one is due in August). We are doing less shows now and hope to have more time to enjoy our place in the country.

Sarah schedules eight quilts a month to quilt for customers and usually finishes them that month. Their “Sarah’s Machine Quilting, Sales & Service” shop is open weekdays in the morning, 10:00 – 12:00 and in the afternoon, 1:00 – 5:00, except when there are doctor appointments, quilt shows or service calls for the machines they sell. It is recommended you call first. The shop is located near Anderson in Mechanicsburg, IN, and has a Middletown address of 5308 N. Mechanicsburg Road, 47356. You may call Sarah at 765.779.4400, a landline; no texts, please.

Alert! KPQG Meeting Program Change for Tuesday, May 28, 2019: New Program – Connie Lancaster with Quilts Plus, “Leftovers, Dealing with the Remains”

Location:  Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU), 1916 East Markland Avenue, Kokomo, IN  46901.

Guests are welcome: You may attend two meetings as a guest before becoming a member. Membership is $30.00 per year for adults and $5.00 for juniors ages 9 – 16.

Time:  7:00 – 9:00 pm; doors open at 6:30 pm

Program Change:

Gloria Stahlhut is not available to present a program as scheduled due to a close family member having surgery on the same day.

In her place, KPQG President Linda Wright arranged for Connie Lancaster with Quilts Plus to present a program and sell merchandise. Connie will present the following:

“Leftovers – Dealing with the Remains. Just find a good recipe!”

In this 45-minute program, we will explore ways to deal with leftover fabrics that accumulate after each project is completed. There will be a Q & A time after the lecture.

Connie Lancaster’s Biography:

“My first quilted item was the ubiquitous tote bag, 12” blocks, hand quilted. Thankfully, that wasn’t the last and only! At first, I told myself I wasn’t going to ‘become a quilter’, because I saw what ‘quilters’ did…they collected fabric and only sometimes produced a finished item!

Well, I became a professional quilter about 35 years ago, making quilts and quilting for others just to make a little fabric money. I began to teach classes and work at Quilts Plus in the mid-90s. There, I could help other quilters get addicted, learn new skills, and increase their knowledge of all things quilting. Eventually, the shop purchased a long arm and my long arm career began. I love bringing quilts to life with great quilting designs!

In March of 2017, I became the fourth owner of Quilts Plus, but had to close the shop due to personal issues. I am now online only at www.quiltsplus.com. I am working toward being able to open another shop in the future, but for now, you can find me at local shows and online.”

Other KPQG Activity:  Show ‘n’ Tell & short business meeting. Bring your ”show ‘n’ tell” and, in addition, any scrappy quilts which fit the theme of the program, Leftovers, fabrics remaining after finished project.
