Space-Themed Quilts at Kokomo Library South Branch’s “Discover Space Exhibit” through Friday, March 29, 2019

The Discover Space, A Cosmic Journey Exhibit* is on display at the Kokomo Howard County Public Library (KHCPL), South Branch, 1755 East Center Road, 46902 through Friday, March 29, 2019. A fun, learning exhibit for you to take your children and grandchildren to have hands-on and interaction with it. AND, there are two space-themed quilts included that are provided by Kokomo Piecemakers Quilt Guild (KPQG) members.

KPQG member Nancy Jeter and grandson Josh Chesshir loaned their space-themed quilt for display during the space exhibit. Josh is 11 and in the 6th grade. This is his second quilt. He mostly did the cutting and piecing of a kit purchased at the 2017 KPQG quilt show. Josh studied space last year when they made the quilt. The longarm quilting was done by The Scarlet Thread Quilt Co., Twelve Mile, Indiana.

Grandma Nancy shares, “Josh has sat and sewn with me since he was a toddler. First, he just watched. Then, I let him try to guide the fabric and he worked his way up to guiding the fabric by himself as grandma passed the correct pieces to him to sew together.”

KPQG member Marilyn Parkin’s loaned her bigger-than-life spaceman quilt for the space-themed exhibit. The longarm quilting was done by KPQG member Janet Bailey.

*KHCPL is one of only nine libraries selected to host the second national tour of the interactive Discover Space: A Cosmic Journey traveling exhibition. The hands-on, interactive exhibit is divided by four sections: SPACE – The Final Frontier; Electric Space; Exploring Our Solar System; and Cosmic Journey. Some of Discover Space features include a game to allow you to build a solar system; a touchable meteorite collection; and a Space Weather Kiosk with a Solar Monitoring Station that shows near-real-time changes in the sun’s atmosphere and photosphere.
